Trapped by "Success"
I love my life, but years ago, I was trapped by my practice. From the outside, my life looked amazing. My practice was growing, my patients were happy, and I was checking off every box of a “successful” dentist. But on the inside? I was miserable.
The Facade of Fulfillment
I was a busy 4-day dentist with a successful growing practice. I had a great income and career, but really, I was a shell of a person. Everyday I’d put on a mask hiding the weight of the long hours, constant stress, and the overwhelming pressure of running a practice. And if I shared that truth with anyone, I’d be made to feel ungrateful. People would say, “Those are great problems to have, I’d love to have what you have.” I’d feel ashamed for complaining, which isolated myself further, but did little good to change how I felt about my life.

A Heartbreaking Realization
I remember coming home late one evening, exhausted from the day, and hearing my kids laughing in the other room. I walked in, expecting a warm welcome, but instead, I saw them imitating me. “Hi, I’m Daddy. I have to go to work again.” They laughed, but I didn’t. My heart sank. What example was I setting for them? If I died today, what would they remember about me? That I loved them, or that I was always stressed and working?
I wasn’t just missing the moments that mattered—I was barely in them. I couldn’t remember the last time I spent quality time with my kids. Sometimes, I questioned how much I even knew about them.

Losing Myself, Tension at Home
And it wasn’t just my kids. My marriage was strained. There was tension between us. My wife constantly complained about me being stressed out, not present, and not spending enough time with her or the kids. “Things are busy right now,” I’d say. “They will calm down soon and I’ll have more time.” But the years kept going by, and I often wondered: If this keeps up, will my marriage survive? How often would I see my kids if I were divorced?
I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I put on weight. I had to begin taking blood pressure medication. The hobbies I used to love—playing golf, working out, even just reading for fun—were distant memories. Yes I had a great career, but at what cost? Who was I, besides a dentist? Was there anything else to me? What kind of father was I? What kind of husband was I?
What's the Point? Nothing helps...
Each and every day, the practice consumed my thoughts. No matter what, it was always on my mind. I tried to distract myself. I tried therapy. I tried meditation. It helped, but I was still lost. Even when I was physically with my family, I wasn’t really there.
I wondered, “What’s the point of all this money if my kids don’t know me, my marriage is falling apart, and my physical and mental health are the worst they’ve ever been.” I was winning on my P and L, but losing at the most important game there was: my life.
The Beginning of a Change
And then COVID happened and I got a 12 week forced vacation from the practice. For the first time, I wasn’t pulled in a hundred directions. It was magical. I played with my kids. I laughed with my wife. I was finally present. For the first time in so many years, I felt fulfilled. I felt connected. I felt valued.
I realized, this is what I’ve been missing. This is what life is supposed to be like! I was done sacrificing it all for my work.
I realized the problem wasn’t my practice—it was how I was running it. Everything felt like it was on my shoulders because I hadn’t built the systems or empowered the team to take the weight off. I thought I had to do it all, but the truth was, I was doing way too much, and it was killing me.
I created a way to schedule more efficiently. I implemented a leadership structure at the office. I poured my heart into processes, documents, and protocols and optimized every single element of my practice. I trained and empowered my team. I started leading instead of doing everything myself. Soon, I felt the shift. It was profound! My team became more confident, my practice ran more smoothly, and for the first time, I felt like I could breathe and enjoy my life!
Finding Fulfillment
Because I became more productive and efficient, I was able to cut my clinical schedule to three days per week, then to two. And now today, I work just one clinical day per week and take 15 weeks off each year. My practice generates nearly $6M annually—and the best part is that it practically runs without me.
But the real success isn’t in the numbers...
It’s in my life.
I’m present with my kids, experiencing the joy of truly knowing them and being part of their lives in ways I never could before. My wife and I are closer than ever. Most importantly, I finally feel like myself again—happier, healthier, and proud of what I've created for myself and my family.
